Thanks Yodawill2000 for instruction how to remove the EGR tubes on my '95 J30. It's too hard to get the tube ends at the EGR body so I did just like Yodawill2000, opens the ends at intake manifolds. They are completely clogged up, so I sprayed them with the oven cleaner and clear the clog with a nylon string. The tube ends are open now but still have some cleaner fluid and wet paste in them. Should it be OK? My concern is the fluid and paste get into the cylinders. Also should I replace the gasket with a new one or can I use the old one with silicon added on both sides of the old gasket (local auto parts don't have the gasket).

Thanks Yoda and Littlewillie. When you removed the tubes, were the ends at the EGR body clogged up with carbon?I am waiting for the Struts and PCV valves & hoses from Infinity of Scottdale. I will reinstalled the EGR tubes at intake manifolds and new PCV and hoses this weekend and let the shop replace the struts on Monday(hopefully the parts will delivery on this Friday). My PCV valves are open and the hoses were clogged. Based on your describe about EGR function and PCV function from other articles, I think my car will run better. Will let you know. Thanks again.

As I told Wayne in a email I used a shop vac with a small attachment while I was cleaning out the clog . seemed to work well.Im sure a few flakes went down but after I had the opening all cleaned up I ran the vac down the tube as far as I could. Amazing what you can do with small plastic tubing and duct tape on a shop vac :O)

Help!!! need a quick response. My car has been down for a week. The part of PCV valve and hoses came today and they are easy to replace them. However, I try to re-install EGR tubes at intake manifold this afternoon but unsuccessful. The one on the passenger side goes in only 1 inch and will not go in any further (it has about another inch to go). The one on the driver side, it end does not align the with hole on the intake manifold and it very hard to bent. It should note that I did not remove the ends at the EGR valve. So the tubes probably are bent.Any suggestion how to do and what tool is needed will be appreciated.Thanks. PS: Yodawill2000, would you please call me.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is the benefit of replacing or cleaning the EGR tubes?

I read the definition, and it seems like its purpose is emissions. Does it affect more than just that?

I have 130K on my J, and just wondering if it's something I should look into doing.

Thanks

My benefit of cleaning the EGR tubes is to pass state inspection and my car (140,000 miles) was passed yesterday. The Check Engine Light (CEL) is off now. Thanks Littlewillie and Yodawill2000. 1993TanJ30, you can wait until CEL code 32 appears or valve cover gasket leak oil. When you do it, I recommend you to do both and also replace the PCV valves and hoses and spark plugs (if your spark plugs have about 60,000 miles). I wish I did the same as Littlewillie did. He removed the plenum (intake manifold) so he has more room to acess to the EGR valve and easy to remove the tubes. I took a short cut by just removed the end of EGR tube under the plenum. It was quick but the tubes were bent. This made it impossible for me to push the tubes back into the holes, even I followed Littlewillie's technics. So I have to unbolt the tube ends at the EGR valve, remove the tubes and straight them until I able to put them back. This took more time than it would if I remove the plenum.Anyway, I glad I was able to do it and learn some experience. The car run great and idle smooth with the new PCV valves, new front struts, new timing belt, new front and rear seals.

New front and rear seals do not tell. They just stop oil leak on the floor.New PCV valves do tell the engine run better and also seem to stop oil leak from valve cover gasket onto both exhaust manifolds (at least there is no oil leak yet after three days).

Awesome Wayne, sounds like your J30 must be running great these days, you must be one happy camper

Man, I remember I let me J30 sit for about 6 months one time (I know, thats awful) and the only thing I had to do was pickup a new battery. After that, I fired her up and she ran so smooth and perfect it was unbelievable

I love these cars...

Nothing is better then a good laugh. Well, it 's "Lost In Tranlation". To remove the tubes at the EGR valve without remove the intake manifold, I had to remove the balance tube, connectors on the electrical harness next to the balance tube, the power transistor on the passenger side, the air regulator on the driver side, and tubes/hoses next the EGR valve on the driver side. All of these just gave me very little room to access to the bolts. It's very time consuming for me to put the AGR tubes back. They were bent when I pried them out from the intake manifold and it took me many times to straight the tubes.
