What's the best way to remove the EGR tube? From the exhaust manifold or at the EGR valve itself?

Tell me about it, just had to pull mine off. Pita is being nice, I think I used a few other key phrases in the process, God I havent worked on 240s in a while, I forgot some of the stupid engineering on it. Like the vaccum solonoids on the back of the head and all the vaccum lines going to them. I have the head off now so those solonoids are getting a relocate to the fender well near the cruise diagphram assmebly. Maybe if I get a bur up my but I do a write up on that and egr cleaning for the smog guys.

What kind of wrench did you use?

My crescent wrench ended up bending the nut (!) and I'm sure the 23mm (or whatever size it is) would have done the same so I just used a pair of vice grips and a rag. There was hardly enough room to turn it, but eventually it loosened up.

Thank god for PB Blaster too, otherwise, I bet it would have been seized for sure.

15/16" wrench and a BFH worked for me.

BFH is the most universal tool. its uses are far and wide. I personally own three stages of BFH's. I wouldnt do without my BFH's.

That an my BAPB's

Damn, I'm having a fun time trying to get this back in. EGR nut is disconnected at the valve, and the nut going into the exhaust manifold just won't go in. Tips?

push the tube so it rests fully in the hole then with 2 fingers try to start the pipe nut while gently rocking the tube in circles till it finaly starts. dont tighten it all the way till you get the nut started on the valve.

Mine was pretty easy, we loosened the nut on the pipe->pipe side, took it off with the mani, then took it out of the mani after it was off the car. Ahh, transverse powa!

AIV pipe, again I took my nice big red pipe wrench. Remember, when using the pipe wrench though, you gotta show some plumbers crack as a tribute to all the plumbers who've used the tool before you. A nice kick and it'll pop off with authority

How do you get the egr tube on the valve side back on. My cresent wrench fits somewhat around the nut. But sits close to the edge of the nut, because the screw on the egr valve itself blocks my crescent from fitting all the way in the middle of the nut. It fits but i got no room to turn, even with the smallest cresent wrench that own..

i'm gonna borrow a set of open end wrenchs and see if it works **Edit**

Finally got that piece of crap back on. Crescent wrench and 2 different kinds of BFH's
