Exhaust Gas Recirculation.....
Basically a tube that connects your exhaust manifold to your intake manifold. It channels exhaust gasses into the intake manifold which helps keep combustion chambers cooler by diluting the air coming in. The cooler combustion chamber temperatures help reduce NOX emissions.

well thats the way it is on my car... It is a hard pipe from the exaust manifold to a metal collector that goes up to that black box with the lines on in and then through the rubber hose to the air intake box, just like i said.

that little box you all are talking about is your AIV not your egr your egr goes behind your motor to the back off your intake manifold. YOUR aiv injectes air into you exshast. Thier should be two pipes coming of your exshast manifold and its downpipe. one for egr and one for aiv.

far1002- you are right, i went out and looked at my motor that is sitting on the floor of my garage and there are two difforent lines, my bad, i dont know what anything is called, all i know is that it is a emissions device. (i dont have a FSM or anything)

The exhaust gasses are cooler than the combustion temperatures. The exhaust gasses also have a low oxygen content, which cools the combustion chamber so that the nitrogen combines with the oxygen that *is* there, and creates NOx.

is it harmful to disconnect this pipe? it seems that this would increase horsepower with more pure air to combust, but would i burn the exhaust valves or somthing with the higher temperatures?

removing your AIV will cause no problems because thats only thier to help your car pass emission's.the Egr can be a different story I don't think that removing it will increase power but if it did it wouldn't be much. But removing it can cause detination in certin cases the egr reduces combustion chameber tempretures and depending on how your car is runing(for exmaple if it is running lean because you have low fuel pressure or some thing and its hot outside thiers a greater chance for detination and i don't think its worth it for a greater chance for detinating. I 'm in the process fo turboing my 240 Its A ka24e and i've just finished the turbo manifold and i'm going to incorperate the egr into the downpipe.
