Hello everyone. Please be gentle. I know practically nothing about engines. Now after saying that I would love to know if anyone can point me in the right direction as to how and where yo start in replacing the egr on my 94 j30. Ive looked everywhere for a Haynes manual or something like it. Ive used these in the past for my truck but cant find one anywhere. I have no idea where to start in replacing this or what I will have to remove to get to it. Just from looking it looks like its impossible to get to. I would love to do this myself and not pay the fortune that will charge at the dealer. Again I'm completely new to this so any and all help is much appreciated.

Are you absolutely sure that your EGR valve needs replacing?

I replaced mine a couple of years ago, while replacing all six injectors, spark plugs, PCV valves, deleting throttle body coolant lines and thoroughly cleaning many things at the same time. You'll need a number of o-rings, gaskets and hoses.

I also bought a 27mm combination wrench and cut it to the required length in order to remove one/tighten one of the big nuts on the EGR valve. It took may have taken as long the replace the EGR valve alone, as it did to do everything else. Penetrating oil, patience and torque wrenches are your friends.

The FSM, and a few on-line guides to pulling the plenum and maintaining some other things are especially helpful.

As a warm-up, I'd replaced the water pump, timing and accessory belts, front oil seals, etc, a few months earlier.

If your getting a EGR malfunction code chances are the tubes going from the EGR to the intake plenum are clogged with carbon. A much easier fix then replacing the EGR. :gapteeth:

It can get even simpler; one or several rubber hoses between the EGR Control Valve and the EGR Valve itself could be disconnected or cracked/leaking.
