What the articles don't tell you there is that with EGR on, the ECM commonly bumps the timing way up for gas mileage, and the EGR not working can then make the engine ping. Not all will do it though, and if a knock sensor is present it simply slows the timing back down but will cost some mileage doing it.
As well, if the engine has a MAP sensor then the ECM can often tell the EGR is not working to post a light due to the missing vacuum drop which happens when the valve is opened up, the MAP can catch that if there is no EGR valve direct position sensor in the system.
A sniffer does not detect EGR missing at idle but it can at off-idle if they do a standard 2000-2500 rpm set to measure emissions at speed like so many states do. If the cats are not brand new they can be worn enough to easily not cover what the valve does to remove NOx.
