What would happen if you plug the egr on the header side, but leave the hole on the backside of the intake manifold open??

What? Remove egr and use the plate on the intake manifold where the egr used to be. Don't ghetto rig stuff.

Your manifold pressure will be way off... I don't even know how many things this could/will break but why would you do this? I have some extra EGR block off plates my friend plasma cut for me. I'll send ya one for $20 if you want to do it right. Keep in mind you'll need an SAFC or something else to even out your AF because blocking the EGR will mess that up. You'll also loose a bit of mileage. Of course you gain 8hp ;-)

Just wondering cause I took it to a shop to remove the egr and the mechanic told me he did block off the egr, but now I run rich, have a high idle, and if my upper o2 sensor is plugged, the motor shakes when accelerating from a dead stop, so I always drive with the upper o2 sensor unplugged. So a safc is needed when egr is deleted?

[rant] What a crock of crap.

An operative EGR system is not active during idle, or at full throttle. It is only operative at partial throttle settings. Removing it will not increase your partial-throttle HP by any amount 99.999% of people will notice, it will increase your NOx emissions astronomically, greatly increases your chances for part-throttle detonation which increases your engines octane requirements, and is the most benign emission control device ever put on a car. Some cars dont have it any more, because some cams are timed to allow exhaust reversion back into the cylinder, which literally is the exact same effect as a functioning EGR system.

As a matter of fact the only time EGR causes problems is when its blocked open (bad idle or simply stalling at idle) or blocked closed (see everything above).

Why anyone bothers spending money (and time) with blocking plates, removing tubes, etc etc etc is beyond me and every other professional mechanic I have ever worked with. Remove the valve, clean it once in a great while, and slap it back on, make the sure vacuum tube isnt cracked or kinked, and be done with it. [/rant]

Not only that, your pro mechanic violated federal law by removing it. What a goon.
