But basically, I was in the carpool lane, went to pass during a section of the lane where poeple are not allowed to cross and the other party tried to change lanes as I was coming up on her. Hit the brakes but we were too close and I tapped his/her rear bumper. Since she was moving left, it caused the front of my wheel to go left and the next thing I know I am picking myself up off the freeway. Didn't feel any pain initially, but I knew something was wrong with my left shoulder. My girlfriend arrived before an ambulance did so she took me to the ER. After waiting about 7 hours to be seen, they took an X-ray and I have a broken clavicle.

Gotta say, all of my gear did what its supposed to. I had a couple of small bruises and the only scrapes were from my zippers on my pants (overpants). Can't expect the gear to protect my collarbone. I can't complain too much. I'm alive and on Vicodin. :)

i guess thats why you wear gear!! Glad you're OK.. :) The bike doesnt look too terrible either, whenever you can walk away from a motorcycle accident you always have to think it could have been a LOT worse!

+1. Glad you walked away from that. Your gear did it's job.

I didn't know motorcycles were allowed in carpool lanes, are they?

They can over here in az. Not sure about the other states though.

Glad you're alright man. Doesn't look like you got too beat so that's good. Broken clavicle > lots of road rash any day.

Motorcycles are allowed in carpool lanes because they generally save gas compared to regular passenger cars. (yes, there are a few exceptions) That's half the point of carpooling anyway, isn't it?

Broken clavicles are usually pretty serious. They can cause all kinds of nasty problems, especially on the side his was broken.

Right, but when you are sent flying off a bike, a broken clavicle isn't "too serious" compared to what could have happened.

It's all relative.

Thanks, sunshine. You just made an otherwise happy thread into this. ^

Anyways, glad you made it out relatively okay. Good on you for wearing a helmet. Too many people ride without one.

Hey all I was saying he was lucky it didn't get any worse. My friend had the same thing from a parachute and his got a little too close to his heart and required surgery.

to be clear, i was splitting the lane and she tried to exit the carpool lane where she wasn't supposed to.

Its also actually mesh gear. so not as robust as textile, but did a good job.

Yeah, they stopped. I'd imagine I'll be getting some kind of comp. Hopefully the person's limits are hig enough. i do have uninsured motorists though.

they are in ca.

absolutely. But its still painful trying to do trivial things. still have to have an orthopedist to have the bones set, so hopefully that will make things a bit better. I can feel it moving around.

Thanks for the kind words too guys.

I also broke my clavicle when I crashed my bike back in 95. It's pretty painful...well, at least mine was. The bones never set right and I have a lump where the break was.

Doesn't bother me now and I have never had any long term issues with it.

Glad to know you are ok and walked away from it. I wasn't so luck with mine. 3 days in the hospital and 22 staples in my head.

Damn dude that sucks. Glad to see that all you got was broken clavicle.

I drive the 91 every day and I have friends like you who ride so I pay extra attention to those on motorcycles. Give them extra room when I can and always get the duece as a thank you.

No sh*it i saw a bike on the 91 west almost get taken out by this huge sheet of cardboard that another car kicked up off the lane. It was scary just to even watch the guy ducked and turned away from it and it went right over his head/shoulder.

Anyway ya anytime you walk away from ANY motorcycle accident, especially on the freeway, you are very lucky. But get that bone set ASAP and any surgery needed to be done to it should be done immediatly dont put off any treatment for broken bones. When they dont heal right it sucks so bad, my wrist never healed right and i can still "feel it move" like you stated above, it sucks.

Glad you are OK. I'd like some of the people out here in AZ to take a look at your pics. Maybe it would wake them up to how much protective gear can do for you. Out here, they ride with no helmets, cut off shorts, tank tops and flip flops on the freeways.

It's the same out here in Korea.
I saw them still riding helmet-less in the rain.
The bicyclists here ride more geared up than the motorcyclists.

Same in PA, motorcycle helmets are optional. But in a odd twist, PA also gives tickets to those who don't fasten their seatbelts in their 2 ton cars/trucks. Go figure.

Well, yes and no. Up here, the car pool (or HOV) lanes were designed to inspire fewer cars on the road (2+ passengers) to reduce congestion rather than shrinking the size of individual vehicle. I have no problem with HOV lanes that allow bikes, I was just a bit surprised to learn so many states permit them.

Helmets for both driver and passenger are required by law here. Most of the riders I see out here are geared up. Helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, the whole bit. It's only once in awhile that you'll see a nut job in shorts and a tshirt. I have seen flip-flops though. Dude must have had some tough a** feet to be able to shift without a top of a shoe to protect his foot.

PA allows motorcycles to use the HOV lanes too, BTW.
