Ok i just put this motor back together its an s13 blacktop with cometic head gasket. hks step 2 cams 555cc injectors FMIC Rom tune..ect ect. Ok so after fixing boost leaks and leaky injector leaks..im getting grayish smoke and im running rich enough at idle to get mis fire and my plugs are soiled black and it cant keep a steady rpm.

Things Ive already done

Changed plugsChanged coilpacksChanged ignitorSwitched from wannabe greddy intake manifold to Stock manifoldSwithced back to STOCK (sohc maf, stock ecu and stock injectors)Checked timingHooked up extra groundsChecked compression 150 on all 4Changed temp sensorCleaned IACVChanged Fuel filterAdded FPG and shows 40psi at idle

Heres what happens..motor starts..rpms go up to around 1800 then motor starts to warm up then the gray smoke starts to slowy build and come out...motor starts to find a rpm...motor starts to have little misfires every now and then..now smoke really starts to come out...

even though its smokin good and running rich the throttle response is very good and can rev to redline but still smokes pretty good..when i turn the motor off and check the plugs..they are very black.

I do have what looks like to be a gasket leak comming from the gasket that goes between the turbo and manifold. now im wondering if this is causing me problems some how.

All i have left for ideas are this gasket and trying another CAS.. im pretty much all out of ideas..

Info anyone?

I dont sounds like your gasket is causing this, but if you have a few hours to spare its no a bad thing to check.

my first thought was boost leak,

and also CAS and timing could be the issue.

just some ideas...

Does the car ever come up to operating temp? What exactly is the color of the smoke? Black/dark-gray are signs of excessive fuel, white is a sign of coolant, with ligh-gray/blueish being signs of oil...

I'm not a huge fan of those cometic headgaskets and I wouldn't run one with all the horror stories of them not sealing.

I'd adjust your IACV to that it when it's warm, if you can get it there, it idles at 750-850...

yeah im changing the gasket today and the cas and see if that changes anything.. if it doesn't its most likely an internal issue.

The motor does reach operating temp just fine and the one time i did take it out..it awesome power but when it got down to lower rpms like first or second cruising into a driveway/parking lot or turning down a street it didn't really want to run unless i gave it a little gas.

The smoke kinda has 2 colors..the first part of it while its just coming out of the pipe is a lite black..then after its full out of the pipe its gray.

Its almost like the combusted air/gas isn't being pulled out of the cylinder fast enough cause if i pull the plugs after the motor has started smoking depending on what cylinder is closed the same color smoke comes out of the spark plug hole

*Update*

Ok so i figured out where the smoke was comming from. the turbo I was using must of had a bad gasket and it was leakig oil out of the exhaust and was draining down. I noticed this when I got under the car and noticed where i had a exhaust leak there was gobs of oil comming out.

As for running rich. I think it was the intake manifold. when i took it off i looked at the its runners and it doesn't look like the injectors were spraying perfectly straight..almost looks like it was spraying at the top of the runner and causing a puddle effect I guess..

Ill keep everyone posted as i switched back to stock into manifold and im taking it to the track Saturday.
