ok, so i jsut read the article in AutoWeek on EDR's and their pros and cons. i believe that some of the applications are really beneficial, but i also think implementation of these thigns should be held off until proper legislation is passed to govern the privacy issues that come with these. my other concern though is people who race their cars in any fashion might have issues with these detecting crashes even thoug the car is just taking a corner while road racing. (a solution might be a sport mode for the track that would allow higher thresholds). opinions, thoughts, etc?

all it does is record data so it can be played back after an accident to determine cause/fault.

it wouldnt falsely "detect" crashes. hitting a stationary object at 5 mph exerts more force than taking a corner at the limit. and even if it did, its just recording. its not controlling the air bags or anything.

if someone wants to read the however minutes of driving it recorded, they would have to go in your car and extract the data. it doesnt just transmit the information to some government bad driving database.
