So this morning i was pulling into my in-laws driveway and sure enough my car bogs on the hill...I look over and there is smoke coming from under the dash at the passenger side.

After that...No start, no crank, no lights on the dash, no fuel pump, not a single thing...well my headlights work....

So I am pretty sure I just fried my ECU.

what makes this happen? I don't think its wiring because the car has been fine for a long time and the previous owner had it for a while with the same wiring...

Not much I can tell you about what could have caused it. There's a lot of things that can fry an ECU as computer components are pretty fragile most times. It could have just been ready to give up the ghost and nothing you could have done was going to stop it.

Just pull it out and see what damage has been done.

Out of curiosity, what gen ECU/Car?

s14sr WC zenki...

One of the grounds was loose...that was the smoke. it was cooking/melting the cable...but it should not have killed the ECU. I just looked up the pin out and it was for the ignition. I have the ecu here with me and it looks fine inside.

So next step is to get home and check the ignition wiring and fuse. That is the only other thing that could cause these symptoms, but if the ignition checks out I will be in need of a new ECU

either way I am preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

The ECU lives...thank God!!! I had to replace the ignition fuse. I'm guessing it blew as a result of the loose ground shorting out.
