ECU tuning and custom ROMs

Hey all

Are there any developers on this forum who have experience working with ECUs? Id like to start a dev project to pull the stock ROMs off of Altimas and build my own tune.

A good place to start would be to find out:
1- What language is the ROM written in?
2- Is there source code available?
3- And what kind of port does the ECU have that we connect to?

Edit: After some research I found that it uses the console obd 2 port
And is there an advantage to using a daughter board rather than flashing the ecu itself?
