ecu trouble codes?

Im a little confused I read the how to on accessing the self diagnostic mode on my ecu it says to put the iginition on. does this mean to turn the engine on? or just turn the key to on without turning over the engine? i have a 90 240 if this helps.

don't turn on the car, just leave it half way and let the light blink and read it.
