Long story short my car has a 5 speed swap done to it by the previous owner but he didnt replace the ECU and left the auto one in the car. I was able to get the car to pass safety inspection last year but this year the guy I brought it to said the ECU is completely toast. He said I can look for one on my own but he can get me one for $500. I have a 1997 Nissan 240sx, what do I have to look for in an ECU? Also would the Jim Wolf Technologies ECU be an option?

What does he mean when he says the ecu is toast? If the car still runs and drives then the ecu is most definitely not toast.

Maybe you should find somewhere else to get a safety inspection done.

Wait I had it all wrong, the previous owner was retarded. He did a auto to manual swap and put in a 1995 Auto ECU, that makes no sense at all. The ECU works but the 97' have a sensor in the transmission that the 95's do not so it will never pass safety inspection.

Just to clarify -

He put a 97 automatic transmission into your car but he then put a 95 ECU.

Is this correct?

Ok, so your car is a 5 speed and it is running off of a 95 auto ecu, that makes absolutely no sense but what ever it happened.

That sensor is the crank sensor, and it is just for the emissions systems, so why do you need it to pass a safety inspection? Or does your cel have to be off to pass?

how does the inspector knows about your ecu issue? I guess you're running on a check engine light.

Yes sir, beyond stupid.

Exactly, he was able to pass it last year, somehow he shut it off just this year he can't because of what 'kouki monster' said, the crank sensor.

are you from the city? if you're upstate, all you need is safety inspection. your inspector didn't have to fail your car if all safety equipment passes such as: windshield, wiper blades, mirrors, tires, suspension, and all emission components connected from visual inspection.

I am from city area and have to deal with emission bs. my car still passes.
