1995 Nissan PU 4 cyl 2wd short bed. The check engine light comes on when cold, and goes off after 5-10 minutes of driving, and stays off until the next day. I checked the ECU, and is flashing red-1, green -4. This is code 14 Vehicle Speed Sensor. So I reset the ECU to clear the code, replace the VSS, and it is still doing the exact same thing. The wiring seems to be OK, what else can cause this? It is not in limp mode, the speedometer works fine, it drives fine, everything works fine except the check engine light coming on when cold and the ECU insisting it is the VSS, even after replacing it.

Happy New Year. Quick question did you do the test with the engine at normal operating temperature?. Try testing the engine temperature sensors. If the sensors are bad this could send the ECU a false reading. This could be one of many reasons for the VSS code to appear.

. Check the connection at the plug. Something I hate mentioning could have a issue going on in the dash. Test the old VSS with a old VSS with a ohm meter to make sure it was bad.

I pulled the instrument cluster and tested the connection from the ECU all the way to the back of the speedo head. It's not a wiring problem. The wiring goes from VSS into instrument cluster, and then out the back of the speedometer to the ECU. The speedometer works, always has, still does, which tells me it's not the VSS itself or the wiring from the VSS into the back of the intrument cluster, because if it was, the speedo would not work. From there, we have the connection from the back of the speedo head into the ECU, and that wire is good also. There really isn't anything left but either a bad speedo head (since that is where the signal to the ECU comes from) or the ECU itself.

Any suggestions on where to get an instrument cluster?

PS Yes the engine was at full operating temp. I just got done driving it - after 2 minutes from a cold start the CEL came on. About fifteen minutes later it went off and stayed off. Check the ECU, and it is flashing 14 VSS, like it always has.

The temp gauge works the same as it always has. Can a bad engine temp sensor really cause a false VSS code?

Car-part.com ....Is listing 11 instrument clusters throughout the USA. Might be one near by. eBay might have on for sale. Did you after clearing the code recheck for codes right after the check engine light went out?? Does the light go out when idling or does this occur only after driving? This the reason for checking temperature.
