I have a 1996 s14 OBDII. The car at one point decided not to start, while trouble shooting I decided to removed EVAP and EGR system. I trouble shoot everything related to spark etc. Still the engine wont fire. Yet when I SWAP the ECU from a OBDI s14, the car comes alive and runs with not problems. Yes you might say the ECU was busted all along, but the same ECU ( OBDII) works with out a problem on the OBDI S14.

Does any one have an explanation to this?

Thanks..

That is bizarre... uh, maybe you have harness problems?

OMG!!!! Thank you for Responding.

Yes I know it is crazy. This problem has kicked my *** for over a year now. Still running with the OBDI ECU with out any problems. But I would love to find a solution.

Who cares? With the OBD version you should be able to have better freedom in terms of modifying your car. I guess the obvious drawback would be not being able to use the obd port. But I would say that either you have a harness problem in some sort of subfunction that only the OBD2 model has, or a problem on the board that only the OBD2 has. You said the OBD2 computer will run the 95, does it throw a light? Do both cars behave themselves?

BTW sounds disturbingly similar to the problem I am having with my S13. Maybe it is time for me to get a new ECU.

I think it has to do more with the board. I say so because, I went back and eliminated one by one every wire that the OBDII, in comparison with the OBD1 ECU, uses so that this way I can trouble shoot where is this short ( if it is a short). Yet the car still only starts with the OBD1 ECU.

Now the real ***** about all of this is emissions testing for NYC and NJ. You must take the test through the OBD plug, or else you won’t pass. From what I read, It was made into law that if your car is OBDII you cant pass the test via the sniffer. So it I don’t know what I will do now, and when I plan to install an SR in the future.

BTW, I think you should swap the ECU, they are very cheap if you buy them through car-parts.com. I bought mines for $75.00. I just call one of the shops what came on the search, and they sent it by mail. Good luck.

Most places that have that allow you to pay for the sniffer tests don't they? I would talk to a shop owner, and maybe do some research at SEMA.org. SEMA is great about protecting our right to modidy legally. And if your motor meets it's legal requirements for a swap then I do not see why you can't run a car that is capable of passing emissions testing on a calculator if it makes you happy. But, I know there must be guys using standalone on the street in NY or NJ. And they won't access through the port. I would say there has to be another option. Or you could do like we do in MO, and just pay to get passed on the inspections. Of course, I am in KC not StLO.

Thanks, I will do more research on shops around the NJ and NYC area.

The thing is, most SR owners who live by me and post here, wont shear the info. Thanks again.

No, I expect they will not. I know I would not share my guy when I did, you need to talk to one of them in earnest. The thing is the fine is HUGE for that, and they will take away your ability to do the inspections. I am sure you can imagine the kind of money maker they are, since something ALWAYS goes wrong, if you know what I mean.
