ECU number for 240SX

When I buy an ECU, should I go by the big number labeled on the ECU or the reference part?

What is the big number like 24, 26? Does it mean anything?

the big number seems to correlate to which ecm it is but the preffered method is to have the full part number. it will be something like xxxxx-xxxxxthere are so many different ones that it is hard to say.
