I am looking for informationabout the many ecu's that are used in the s13's. Including:How many. Differences. Can they be interchanged.89-90 vs 91-945spd vs auto.Ca smog vs Federal vs Jdm

There is a lot of disinformation out there and I would like a real ecu education. Not "he said...she said".

the ecu's from the 89-90 are not interchangable with the 91-94's as they're different engines. the 5spd ecu's do not have the shift maps that the auto ecu's have, and the auto ones will be looking for the signals coming from an auto ecu.

CA smog is very strict, as you can see from my other posting about my failing emissions testing, well since I live in an "ehanced" smog check area. Federal, I'm not too sure what you mean by that since I think that's a general guideline followed by auto makers, I think you're thinking state/local emissions laws (as those are the ones that pertain to your car getting smogged if required) which can be found on state/local DMV sites.

Japan, I've no clue as to what they look for in terms of emissions, they're very strict about their emissions policies but check for different things from what I've heard.

fedral ecms are different then california certified cars. most california ones have 2 additional sensors that i can think of off the top of my head. as far as import ecm's a guess would be that if they are the same engine they would match fedral ecms but not 100% sure on that.
