I have a sensor that has gone bad and cause the car to run extremely rich....however i dont feel like taking it somewhere and paying $80 for them to scan the ecu. however, i went to my chilton's manual for directions on how to pull the codes manually and it is about as clear as muddy water, so i would appreciate some directions how to put the ecu into dignostic mode in order to find out which sensor has gone bad, also if i could get a list of what the codes mean that would be great.

You're gonna ask yourself why Nissan had to put the side of the ECU you need to get to against the firewall, lol.

#1 I work at Advance, and we did it first (for free diagnosis). However, on a pre-96 vehicle, this is not an option, unless you find someone with CONSULT. What you must do: 1) Pull up the passenger side splash guard under the door. 2)Pull back the carpet under the glove box. 3) You will see the computer on the kick panel, unbolt it from the unibody. 4)Take alligator clips and connect one to the body of the car, and one to the body of the ECU. 5)On the back of the unit, you will see a small grey wheel with a label in front of it, turn it to the other extreme. 6) put the key in the run position. 7)Watch either the check engine light or the light on the back of the ECU. 8)As they blink, count the flashes. Like Morse code, Long blink are decimal x and short is y (Think like this: xy). so if you get 3 long blinks and 5 short ones, you have code 35, which I believe is a bad knock sensor. Hope that helps.

Also, if you are having problems with extreme enrichment, you should check your MAF or the plates that are around the PCV, because it plays a part in the control of the IAC and AIV systems, which will control enrichment.
