Didn't read most of the article because it seemed so stupid.

Got to :
with physical access to your car's ECU, a hacker could "adversarially control a wide range of automotive functions and completely ignore driver input -- including disabling the brakes
With physical access to your car.... they could cut your f*** brake lines.

So breaking news:
With enough time, money, and knowledge a hacker could do what a 12 year old with a knife could do in a second or two?

Yeah, that's true. But I just through it was interesting to be able to manipulate this through the ECU.

The good part about this is that if a Black hat hacker can crack through the encryption then a White hat hacker can do just the same. He squeeze more power out a of engine and control the interior systems, brakes...The list goes on.

So there is some good out of this.

Just think... soon all of our cars will be connected through the CAN network and V2V communication. I foresee bumper-car hijinks.

The Engadget story leaves out a LOT of details. The actual discovery/study/proof of concept was with ONSTAR, not just any old modern CAN-bus ECU network. The researchers were able to remotely manipulate a car by taking advantage of its Onstar networking.
