ECU flashing/updating

hi All
i may have a bad cat based the codes im seeing. (2001 QX4 - 125k miles)
someone said that updating the ecu (ie reflashing) might make the error condition go away since the 'compliance range' for pass/fail has been relaxed.

my Q: how do i know what version of ecu program i have ? is this something that infinity/nissan dealer cover outside of warranty , if not what does it cost.

if i do have to pay i want to at least know the ecu was updated from version x to version y and it fixed known problems a,b,c.... is that type of info available ? (ie like typical s/w firmware updates)

I've got a 2001 Pathfinder that had a bad o2 sensor and they said I might need that as well I got quoted 200 dollars for it and was given a service bulletin that says if the ECM P/N is 23710-4w000,-4w001 on a car built before 8/1/00 or 23710-4W020,-4W021 for after (note this is on automatic transmission) then it needs to be flashed to the new ones. It says to use consult-ii to see the P/N and I don't have the procedure handy but it is supposed to be included in the bulletin (they didn't give me that part in the print out I have.

Does anyone know a way to have the car show me the current software version of the ECU (sounds like the it a part number). ?
I seem to remember that i can somehow put the Navigation system into some kind of troubleshooting mode and see info on the screen?
I am trying to avoid having to pay the dealer to hook up that consult 2 tool
