Is there any reason why a 96 base model couldnt use an ECU from a 96 SE? Things like ABS, etc arent directly controlled by the ECU, are they?

Also, can anyone tell me how to decode the serial number on the top of a ECU to find what year/model its from?

there are idle air differences between 5spd and auto. say a 5spd car with an auto ecu will run but the idle might not be perfect, good way to get rid of speed governor though. i have a couple 95 auto ecu's if you want to try it out.

other difference is between OBDI and OBDII. the ecu's will interchange but some wires will need to be repinned to make certain things work, i think mainly a/c. check out http://www.jimwolftechnology.com to find the diagrams.
