been fighting and idle issue on son's 96 na. check engine light is on. Z1 suggested putting ecu into diagnostic mode. I looked at how to do it but this 96 model is OBD2. I have scanned it with my lil scanner from Autozone but it says zero codes. Any suggestions. My scanner is a $50 model from Autozone

I don't believe the OBD2 ECUs had diagnostic mode, its pretty easy to tell. Pull up the passenger side carpet, remove the wooden kick panel and see f there is a knob on the side (right side IIRC) of the ECU. The knob is recessed flush with the case. If its there, turn it all the way CCW then turn the ignition to the on position and watch the CEL. The instruction for this are in the troubleshooting section of the FSM. If there is no knob on the OBD2 model then your other option is to source conzult software and cable.

1st, thanks for the fast response. Back is giving me fits so no crawling around my son's stupid a** car today...lol. Just kidding about that. Will check this weekend. I do have a cheaper OBD2 scanner but is says no codes. I'll look into what you suggested.

Just looked at the Conzult page. What is a DDL cable and where can I get one?

It's a usb to consul port cable. Consult port is a nissan specific diagnostic port. On the OBD1 cars it's under the left corner of the driver side dash panel. I guess it would be near the OBD2 port on your son's car. It's a gray 8 or so pin port.

Ok, I'll look this weekend. Who sells the cables? Any idea why I'm not getting codes through the OBD2 scanner?

OBD2 was mandated to set a standard for displaying emissions related codes. The auto manufacturers saw a chance to make diagnostics easier so more and more codes were added as time went on. The Z32 being a 96 and the end of the production run stateside had as little development as necessary put into it for make it compliant for 96. This is why you're not seeing anything through the OBD2 port.

that makes sense. Son has been driving it for a couple weeks now and he hasn't had issues. if check engine light comes on again I'll try disconnecting the battery to clear the codes. I'll eventually have to by the above mentioned software and cable.

Car still acting up. I looked at the ecu tonight and it does have the diagnostic nob on it. Will be diving into that this week and most likely ordering the Conzult

If it has the knob you don't need consult, consult wont tell you much more than the knob will. It may give you some voltage and resistance readings but nothing you cant do with a multimeter. The codes are all in the FSM.

Why right here on NICO, follow the link in my signature. You may have to scroll up to my first response in the thread because the sig doesn't appear to show up in later posts.

ok, went through the steps, easy enough, and got code 55. 5 slow flashes then 5 quick flashes. This is the only code I got. This indicates no faults. I have another post talking about the issues we've been having
