I just recently bought a 95 S14. The seller had installed an OBX short shifter and an HKS exhaust. Driving the car home, I realized that the check engine light was on. It has never gone off so I just checked the ECU code, it came up as 32. A guide says this is the EGR code. What is the EGR, is this related to an exhaust, and how can I fix it? Resetting the ECU according to what the articles here and the FAQ at 240sx.org say did not make the CEL turn off. Thanks for any advice!Ross

hmm it should work. If he just installed the exhaust, you'd have to reset the comp, so te comp can get used to the new exhaust system. Try reseting the comp. If not, the replace the EGR. I beleive it's a sensor. I can't think of it off the top of my head, but search on the boards for CEL Codes or something to that.

If the S14 emission system is anything like the S13's emission system, then you have a ton of vacuum hoses in the system, a few of which could easily be connected to the wrong "port", which will trigger the CEL. I had the code 32 on my S13, and it took me a few months before I decided just to tear the entire system apart and reconnect it according to the FSM. Fixed the problem, and took all of a hour, hour and a half, to do everything. My advice would be to get a FSM, or if someone else could scan the pages, that would really help you out.

my stupid lemon throws that code here and there .. it goes and comes ... one question .. arent only california models equiped with that crap .. mine also throws a injector leak cel here and there... but they go away after 50 starts or i reset it .. i leave my kick panel off to check the codes from time to time .. heh only reason i dont mess with it is because ima do a swap soon .. i just need it to take me from point a to b for now .. :) i love my lemon :D

EDIT: grrrr more typos .. need to remember to proof read :D

Yeah thats the weird thing, all the guides said code 32 is for Cali models only. Of course, that includes states with similar restrictions as Cali, perhaps Illinois falls under that category?

.. or it was originally a CA certified vehicle..

I had error 32, right before I went to get it smogged.. it cleared it self and passed w/o any issues..

I had broken one of the tips that a vacuum hose connects to, I think that's what my problem was, I replaced the solenoid and hooked it back up - seems to do fine now.. no CEL (knock on wood)

I know at least on the early S13's (and probably until 1996), the EGR code was only on California models. With 1996 and OBD2, all 240's probably have such a code, but I am not speaking from knowledge there, just a somewhat educated guess. ;-)

I have a code 32, and its called EGR FUNCTION. There should be a temp sensor where the EGR valve is near the plenum, and if theres little flow, it throws a code..

It can only be 4 things

1. EGR valve2. BPT valve3. EGRC solenoid valve4. Vacuum related problem

How the system works: The EGR valve is hooked onto the plenum, and when the ECU decides its time to initiate the EGR, it sends a message to the EGRC solenoid valve (should be in the front of the engine, a litlte itty bitty thing with hoses on it) to clsoe, and this opens up the vaccuum. The valve is connected to the intake somwhere... WHen the solenoid opens, the vacuum goes through, all the way back to the EGR valve, which lifts, and allows the EGR gasses to come in

Another possibility is that its clogged and needs cleaning......

It seems to be a rare event when it's not just a vacuum problem. You can push up on the EGR valve to see if it works (it should make the engine run very rough, or even stall). Just look around, and see if anything is loose, etc, it shouldn't be too hard to find the problem (a FSM is really handy to have)

On my KA, the vacuum hose on the bottom of the EGR valve was cracked. It's a ****** to get under there and check those hoses, there's a lot of them back there. If you can push up on the EGR and get the engine to run rough, vacuum hoses might be to blame.
