So i opened my ecu and saw the trace that was burnt and followed it to the pin which happens to be Pin #36 which is the 'Ignition Switch' what do i do to fix this problem besides the obvious get a new functional ecu... Do i replace my ignition switch too? I had a thread on here a little while ago about my whole story of what happened one day zerothread?id=371664

Things dont burn up, or clear fuses for no reason. Its because there is problem. Most likely the is a short.

Download the FSM and get a multimeter and ring it out (ohm) Find your short and get a new ECU. You allready damaged two THERE IS A PROBLEM

It could be a multitude of problems associated with that circuit. Pin 36 is fed by the black/red ignition switched wire. I would go through the service manual and look through everything associated with that wire in the EC section. More than likely though, I'd blame the ignition coil for going bad and backfeeding into the line.

Thank you, i need to get another working ecu but in the mean time i can do some tests without it right? hook up a multi meter to that pin and then to the ignition red/black wire? what about the MAFS wiring alot of people have told me about that being the cause as well. I really hope not though

MAF doesn't interact with that wire at all. It gets its power from the black/white ECCS relay circuit, which is fed from a different part of the ignition switch.

You should be able to test the ignition coil per the FSM as well as other things with the ECU unplugged.

If you're short on cash/time you can solder a new wire to bridge the portion of the trace that was burned out. It's a temporary fix at best, but it can get you running at least.

i thought about fixing the trace but thats where else it gets even more weird.. I put in an ecu from my friends car with the same EP on the side of it and tried to start it, I had spark and the fuel pump activated but it would not start.. assuming the injectors were not functioning? or being activated?? i dont get it he put it in his car and his starts right up but when he goes to turn the car off it stays running! always in the ON position is what it seems like, so my car messed his ecu up too... i dont get it..

Told you there was a short! Fix the short before you put in another ecu your just gona keep burnin them up.

by the way I have a working coil

Hey thanks for all the replies, i need to figure out the best way to diagnose this problem id rather not just rip the MAFS harness apart to see if there is a problem. And also if someone has a wiring schematic then that would be helpful, i know alot of people had this problem and i need to get this figured out asap and how do i know im not going to burn up another ecu as soon as i put it in after i think the problem is fixed?!?! THANKS!

I hope he is right, I have talked to alot of people they have all said 9/10 times its caused by the MAF wiring. I will check other things first i mean the coil and everything is all from the factory with 200k miles on them, I might just end up replacing everything that has to do with the ignition system and just hope that fixes it, i hate playing guessing games. Well see though i need to first understand the wiring schematic...

I was looking around the harness in the engine bay, and i found a small black wire with a white stripe, in it that was touching a sharp corner on the head of the engine, I inspected the wire closer and the copper wire was exposed.. i dont know if that could be the cause of my problem or not? heres a pic of where the wire goes

Thats not my engine bay lol just the closest pic i could find of the distributor wiring!

i have the exact same problem, i just burnt my second ecu after a 4 month period, i found a short next to the ignition switch the first time, apparently theres another... and worse, cause this time it fried the transistor in the ecu not just the line going to it...i checked my coil last time, it was good i have no reason of suspecting it isntit is SO random i hate it!i do believe my short is near my ecu, hopefully ill have good hunting lol
