Hi,
I have a 2003 I35 infiniti. I was driving and i suddenly smelled a strong odor like an electric burning. Once I got home I couldnt re-start my car. I learned that the ecm burned out. I would like to know what may have caused this so that once i replace the computer i can avoid the new one getting burnt out as well. Thank you

Welcome to NICO.

Aside from obvious short circuit, check the battery and alternator cables. There are drivers (power transistors) inside the ECU for IACV and Electronic Suspension (front). A short circuit in those components can 'fry' the ECU.

I would fully check out the electrical system before simply plugging in a new ECU in case it's an external source which caused it to fry. Don't want to have to order another one....
