Ok, so the Factory Service Manual has a diagram of the ECM being behind the A/C / Radio controls in my 1998 QX4.

It may sound like a dumb question, but how do I get to it? Do I need to remove some of the interior trim? What does it acually look like?

Most definitely you will need to remove the radio trim and the radio itself. You can find the center dash dis-assembly instructions for your vehicle in the FSM in BT.pdf.

Thanks Pwnin,

I've managed to take the centre dash apart before I bought the FSM.

I was hoping it would be simpler than this. Is this some ploy to encourage me to buy a plug-in consult?

Why do you need to get to the ECM? Are you trying to replace it?

You say this like I am on the wrong track - and I probably am!

I need to get the codes out. According to page EC-59 of the FSM, I need to get a screw driver into the ECM to change to Diagnostics Mode II.

Am I going about this the wrong way?

I didn't think they were still using the screw selector in '98. I guess you do have to get to the ECM to switch it into diagnostic mode. Also, most auto parts stores will read the code via OBD port for free.

I am trying to publsh the page, without much success, but apparently so.

Why, is there an easier way of doing this on later models?
