My wife reports that the r/f speaker in her '92Q is popping so often that she can't use the sound system. A brief archive search tells me to remove the speaker, and send it to Clarion for repair. So, do I need to remove the door panel, or the speaker grille. I have the manual, doesn't look too tricky to get the panel off, any extra tips? Also, can I run the system with that speaker out for repair. Thanks, Alan

the door panel...not the grill....you also send the speaker back to Bose... 1-800-231-2673..

they will give you an authorization form to return... I think they charge 75 dollars...and essentially give you a new speaker and amp.... you might be able to sweet talk them into doing it for nothing.

You can run the system minus the speaker ...just take the door panel off..... you slide the door armrest back... and then take out 4 screws... and then slowly pop off the panel with a screwdriver.... whole process shouldn't take you more than a half hour.... well maybe 45 minutes the first time..

I have done it several times...so I find it fairly easy to do...

Don't mess with the speaker grill..it's part of the door panel.

Excellent description here...http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalI ... ntbose.htm

If your car is part of the recall for rear amplifiers, they'll rebuild the fronts at no charge too. All you'll pay is shipping to get them there!

You'll probably want to send both off at the same time. Use the phone number natsoundup listed and they'll take care of you... If not let me know and I'll dig out the contact I used before.

As far as running the car without the speaker, I wouldn't expect a problem - I ran mine without the RF for several months. Not sure about having both out - I'd probably set the fader to the rear while they're out.

There was a recall on this due to the rear speakers catching on fire believe it or not! my dealer replaced with new ones for free. This was two years ago on a 92 with 100k.

Tell me more about the recall. Where can I see if my car qualifies.

I've got an early '90 Q with BOSE, and the rear amps seem to be going (pops and you can "hear" turn signals / applying brakes or anything that rapidly loads or unloads the electrical system.

I haven't pulled them out because it looks like a massive pain to pull the rear seat out.

Recall doesn't apply to 90. Back seat comes out fairly easy, bottom cushion lifts up from the front as you pull the two switches near the floor. Arm rest requires removing a couple screws behind the flap velcroed in place. Take out about 4 phillips screws at the bottom and the backrest is gone. Pull up firmly, but carefully and the speaker deck with the grills and storage compartment lid pops off. I got all 4 speakers rebuilt by Bose for $300 and no more popping wife, er speakers.

back seat takes about 10-15 mintues to pull out...

if you can sweet talk them and tell them how great Bose is...they may rebuild all 4 for free...

hint: I have a 90Q
