Sony takes 2nd place, behind Nintendo, but ahead of MS, whose entire presentation revolved around the failtastic Kinect. Yeah, they had a new console revision, which earns points. But Kinect sucks, and it was the only other thing they really talked about. Kinect and not being broken anymore. Yeah, fail.
BUT...as Badger said, E3's not about how you present, it's about what you present. 90% of Sony's presentation was random generic games that barely deserve TV ad airtime, let alone E3 stage time. Shaun White? GTFO! And I cannot believe everyone got excited over Killzone 3. WTF? That series is the running joke of the FPS world. No substance, all shinies, proven and reproven. It's got all of Halo's overpromotion with none of Halo's charisma, fun, or not-being-complete-crap. Killzone 1 was crap. Killzone 2 was crap. Killzone 3 is going to be crap. Oh, but it's 3D. Yay gimmicks.
And speaking of gimmicks, I loved the attempts to assure us that Move will not be a Wiimote knockoff...despite the fact that it comes packaged with Wii Sports. I mean PS3 Sports Champions. And the fact that not ONE SINGLE "real" game was shown using Move. NONE. Just a bunch of gimmicky Move-purposed Wii-like cache-in games.
My favorite part of Move is the fact that the initial entry fee is ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY DOLLARS FOR A SINGLE CONTROLLER. If you want to play any of the inevitable slew of Wii-knock-off party game cache-ins with anyone else, it's going to cost another $70 for each additional complete controller. And even if you buy the $400 PS3/Move bundle, you STILL have to spend an extra $20 to buy the nunchuck, which is bafflingly not included. At least Nintendo gives you both halves of their motion controller with the console. Can you imagine the uproar if everyone had to go out and buy a Wii Nunchuck with their Wii? WTF?
Naw, the only thing that didn't completely suck at Sony's presentation was LBP2 (oh, and Portal, but that's not a Sony thing, it just happened at Sony's presentation). Everything else was garbage barely worthy of stage time.
I love my PS3, but I have been disappointed with Sony as a company for a long time...and I certainly didn't see anything today to change my impressions. They're so hung up on 3D (which I still maintain is a gimmick that will NEVER see the momentum they're praying for) and keep acting like that's a really big deal. It isn't. 3D's entry costs are WAY too high, and even if they weren't, the tech sucks right now. I can't say if I'll EVER buy a 3D TV, unless I end up wrong and the tech becomes ubiquitous in HDTVs in the coming years. But that's the keyword: "years." Not now. Not tomorrow. Not even next year. YearS. 404: Care not found.
Oh, and there's Playstation Plus, which, depending on its goodies, I may be interested in. I maintain hope for free movie rentals (even a limited number) each month with the paid subscription. The first 3 months being free for everyone is awesome either way. Great way to get people interested in something they might otherwise be hesitant about. So that's 2 things that were worth seeing.
Nintendo, on the other hand, hit my target.
The 3DS is EXACTLY what I wanted. In fact, I've been saying for months that I REQUIRE the following things from it:
An analog stick
A bigger top screen
Remakes or ports of N64 and GCN Zelda titles and other last-gen titles.
Optional/toggleable 3D
And it's got 'em all. Analog stick's there. Bigger top screen's there (granted, it's lower resolution than I hoped...which is disappointing). Ocarina is being remade for it, which means we might also get lucky and see Windwaker ported over. 3D is adjustable, including a full-off option.
I'm still anxious that Nintendo will pull their usual stupid and foul up the online service for it, but recent trends indicate they MIGHT have finally caught on to just how important streamlined online is for any modern console.
Then there was Skyward Sword (stupid name, I have to admit) which despite Nintendo's assertions to the contrary, looks a hell of a like like the Zelda we all know and love and not like a big departure from the established formula (a good thing; don't fix what isn't broken).
And Kirby's Epic Yarn!
And Epic Micky
And Other M (thought we've already seen a lot of it, so they could have survived without it)
And DONKEY KONG FRIGGIN COUNTRY RETURNS! Which is almost as awesome as Kirby. Almost.
And THE NEW KID ICARUS GAME! Which I've been speculating about for months. Maybe more awesome than DKC. Maybe.
Yeah, Nintendo wins in my book.
