I've rebuilt my 145k truck engine. I drove about 1k after the rebuild. Once in a while I'd get a lifter tap when I started it. Randomly, hot or cold engine. It went away usually with a little idling. It died 2 hours from home at wal-mart of all places.

So I went junkin. I got a whole set of lifters and cam off a 240. Had the cam inspected at a machine shop. Journals were good. So I brought it home. The lifters were stiff kinda spongy. But I thought they would pump up. After 20 minutes of idling no change in the tapping sound. Still spongy. I'm planning to buy a new set but its going to be a few months.

Does anyone here no how to purge the air from the lifter. I think the ones I bought would be okay if it would pump up.

Any help would be appreciated

run the engine at 1500-2000 rpm for 20-40min. if they are still clackin and you know that they all moved or were spongy when you installed them, check your oil level and pressure. If they continue to clack, take them back out and check them again. If all the little cylinders move and are not frozen they should pump up.

oor, u can do this: since the pic quicksilva posted states that runnin the engine might not get rid of the air bubbles inside the lifter(s)
