I'm pretty new to the forum, so bear with me if this has been asked before. I just bought an 89 with the 91 de engine swap already done, and done corectly to the best of my knowlege. I was told before i bought it however that it needed a new MAF sensor, and i tried to use the one i had from and older sohc engine and it still had no effect. Does this mean that it's a problem othe than the MAf, or isit just that the sohc and dohc sensors are not interchangeable? There are also some spliced wires right before the sensor where i think somone had tried to use a different MAF and needed to attatch a different adapter. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanx

I forgot to mention that the car DOES in fact run, but of course the mix is very rich and it's very jump at lov to mid rpm. when i tried the sohc sensor it, changed thequality of the idle and revs, but still ran super rich. I don't wantto buy a new MAF unneccesarily, so i really need to know if it's soley a MAF prob.

As long as the previous owner performed the swap correctly, and used the DOHC ECU and wire harness...then you need a '91-94 MAF sensor.

'89-90 SOHC MAF's are NOT interchangeable with '91-94 DOHC MAF's.

Do you beleive the SOHC MAF has to be replaced with DOHC MAF if using the DE ECU? This may sound crazy, but I'm having trouble having my car idleing after DE head swap, and i am using S-ecu with S-maf.

Short of going out and gettin a new MAF, how could i check if a faulty MAF was the problem? Should i take it to a dealership? I hate going there because everything always ends up being so expensive, but i know they have the best diagnostic tools. Also, how easy is it to change the rear motor mounts myself, and how much should they cost and how much is the labor at a shop?

Yes, the MAF must match the ECU...it's a tuned and calibrated sensor, and the ECU will have completely the wrong input if you use SOHC MAF with DOHC ECU, or the opposite...

And longjon - There is no rear motor mount. One on each side, and a transmission mount...they are all pretty easy to change.

As for diagnosing the MAF as the problem...swap with a known-good MAF from a buddy, or just buy a used on from http://www.car-part.com, probably $20-25 plus shipping (order a '91-94 MAF).

It would be tricky at best to determine whether a new maf will fix your problem entirely, but you can at least test your maf and determine whether it is bad. Use the forum search (when it starts working again...) to find the test procedure for it. I don't know the values for the de.
