like the title says, my e-brake light stays on when i am driving, but goes off randomly, and comes back on... i was just wondering if there is anything this is pointing to? BTW it is a 1990 240sx

if you have a 240sx then you are probably low on brake fluid or that your cable is stuck,, if you have a q45 or some other stuff maybe the sensor on brake pad is telling you that it's gone

if low on fluid & no leaks are present @ the brake lines/calipers/master cyl...

... then i suggest getting the brake linings checked for wear... might be thinning out & u don't want to go metal-to-metal & haveta buy new brake rotors as well as pads.

(if u can't do this/feeling lazy to pull wheels off, some shops do have a free brake /steering/suspension/ undercar inspection; ie pepboys sJersey <nyc wanted $10; bah>)

another scenario is to check that the parking brake lever is fully down. even the slightest lift from my handle will open the electrical contacts to light up the brake lite on my dash...

u can check for cable binding/stretching (there's an adjustment @ the handle to slightly compensate for the stretching)

last point lovless mentioned is disregarded since 240sx's came w/ the mechanical wear sensors instead... ahh my open exhaust @ one time drowned out the worn rear pads squealin' & i caught it in time (d/t routine checkup/tire rotation every 6 months)

One of the switches might be stuck or broken. Look into the brake fluid reservoir and look for a float switch under the screen. Use a dental pick or something and try wiggling it up and down. Should be up.

well, if the braking system checks out OK......u might wanna get the charging/battery system checked out.

i recall that this light, in conjunction to the battery light may go on as an attempt to bring your eyes to the instrument cluster... might be a simple problem like a corroded battery terminal.

but, i dunno about just the e-brake light staying on by itself... oops D beat me to it (dayum slow @$$ PC still on win98/dialup)

ya, recheck switches @ the masser cyl & brake handle

yup. alot of guys have had to deal with the "evil red lights". they are the e-brake and battery light that come on....this combination will indicate that the battery isn't recharging like it should or that the alternator isn't producing power like it should. check and make sure your alt. belt is tight.

i'm leaning towards the switch on the parking brake handle... it's sooo sensitive.

i did this last night; i barely lift the handle from the console (before the first 'click' noise) & it lit up immediately.

but i'll sit n wait till i get an update from the OP <twiddles thumbs>
