Well i managed to get a hitachi unit from Autozone and I was able to swap out the SR head onto it. But has anyone had the problem where these teeth slip out and then slip in with minimal effort?

I installed it, and it turned on the engine fine, but after... it was making a sound like it was still turning even with the engine already running. It was almost like the gear on the starter was caught on the flywheel. Took it to autozone to have them tested out, and they told me that there is a problem with the head, something going on with the gears. Did something just pop loose inside the head? Did I f*** up somewhere?

you put the solenoid spring in the wrong way. take off the solenoid and reseat the pin.

the solenoid spring is what resets the head and pushes it back into the housing after its done cranking the motor.

yours is under the pin... rather then on top of it... so the head just sits there, try that and let me know

Well I reseated the spring and now the "head" stays inside. I installed it, went to start the car and it started with a "stumbling" noise, grinding sound. Is this typical when a fresh starter is installed? The three small gears inside definetly have grease on them. Will it damage the flywheels teeth if it keeps grinding like this?

test it at autozone before putting it in the car...

if you reassemble right, it should work fine.

You don't need to go to autozone to test it. Just get some one to stand on it and give it some juice haha.

I don't know if I should do this or not.Everytime I start my car it whines extremely loud like the starter gear is being stuck on the flywheel. But the thing is it will do it in the begining or middle of cranking the engine over.

Just thought I'd post this up so people can see the difference between the Mitsubishi and the Hitachi unit, so when and if they need to rebuild they're SR20det starter they know what too look for. This paper came in the box of the reman. starter. By the way the Autozone part no. is 16928.

This seems like the perfect thread to ask, does anyone know of an alternative starter head that can be used to replace the SR20det's? So that way one can have a "new" starter with out spending so much $$$$

Just posting up some more pics so people can understand more.As you can see, the reason that these solenoids are not interchangeable is because of the difference of the little arms at the end.

This is the solenoid that the SR20det hitachi starter uses:

This one is the misubishi solenoid that does not work with the SR20det starter:

Hitachi info is true, both times ive done rebuilds ive used hitachi starters without knowing it - my solenoids always looked like the first in the example, so it happened to my be coincidence.
