Great Forum I just bought a used 2000 Infiniti I30. Great car! I have never been a performance kind of guy, and have driven mid-level American Sedans most of my life. ie Buick Regal. I took the jump up to luxury mixed with performance, shouldn't have waited so long. So anyway this car is in great condition, and I read a lot of talk about synth oil, and synth blends. On the Durablend I see a lot of recommendations on the 10W-40, but I was considering the 5W-30 to squeeze the gas mileage up with the current gas prices. Is there a reason the Durablend 5W-30 would be a bad choice?

Dragon:

Welcome to our club!As for oils:

I mostly recommend these oils (w/ the exception of the Syntec which has done poorly in VQ30 engines such as yours):

http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....229.1

But the Durablend is a known good oil. With a lower milage car staying with a 30 weight isn't a huge handicap especially if you live in a colder area.Still the 10w-40 is pretty stable and will presumably do a better job protecting during hard running to to thikcer boundary layer protection.

Of course I dont know your driving habits, so that may never be a factor and the slightly freer start-up a 4w- will ahve over a 10w- may become more important in your case.

Its difficult to predict but neither grade is a bad choice and in a younger car a 30 weight is should be ok.

That oil's fine but I doubt the gas mileage would be more than 0.1% better. Better gas mileage from lighter oil is a function of marketing, not science.

Thanx for the input guys, and thanx for the compliments on the car Palmer. I really like the color. It is a little harder to keep clean, but it just seems they made so many Infiniti's in Silver, White, or Champagne color. All fine colors, but I like a little more depth. I think I may add a spoiler, and leave all else the same.

BTW:

Rumor has it ,that castrol will soon greatly improve their oil formulations, at least in the SYntec area (already have brought their GTX's to a very good level). As many of you know, their current SynTec oils dont have a good reputaion with many.

The first one out of those is a green colored Castrol Syntec 0w-30, which is made in Germany and is a full PAO/Ester formulation (group IV, group V).can be had only some places so far.

Watch NICO General, for any further intel, I can gather in the next few months on this.
