So, the dealer tells me that i am unable to make duplicate car keys for the Versa S Sedan (not SL) since it has some type of magnetic chip in it and only the dealer can do it. Is this true? If so, whats the cheapest way to get duplicate keys? Anyone else able to do it online for cheap? I just want a duplicate key, don't care about the remote keyless part.

Thanks.

It's actually true for all Versa models. You will need to get the key replicated at the Nissan dealer in order for it to work correctly.

I would suggest contacting Scott over at West Covina Nissan to order the key assy. he'll give you a better deal then your neighborhood dealer, then when you receive it you have to go to your dealer and have it programed just call the service dept and they can give you a quote to program.Hope this helps you out.One of the Puppies got mine so I'm in the same boat. Thank God for the extra one they give [email protected]

If you would like to get a key for the 'S' model Versa please e-mail me [email protected] for price and shipping, please be careful some people say they can cut and program the "chipped" key but 9 out of 10 can not and you'll end up having to bring it to the dealer... but e-mail me and I can get you a price for the key, please include you zip code.

Thanks,

My parents have a GM with a similar 'smart key' and they were able to get a blank, have it but and programmed through a company called streetkeys.com. they don't have the info for 2007 Nissan models yet, but I asked CS about a week ago and the guys said they would in about a month. I have no clue what the price will be either, but for my parents it was only about $50 total, where the dealer wanted close to $100.

The 'SL' keys are different, but $125 for the key only that is a little expensive, even with the programing, if you would like e-mail me and I can get you pricing, but you would still have to take it to the dealer to get it cut and the remote programed. They will need all your keys so they can program the new frequency to your 'old' set of keys.

I just had a thought.... some dealers will not cut the SL key because they don't have the machine to do so, and they would call a lock smith to cut the key, that could be why it so much $$$. They might be adding the lock smith charge in there too... but idk, you would have to call and ask.

I just wanted to add that you can get a copy that will only open the door almost anywhere that cuts keys for 2-3 dollars. I know it won't start the engine but it will save you if you lock your keys in the car.

Not really....The versa I have doesn't even have holes for the key to go into. Only opens with the remote.

This just seems to be a way for them to make money, it seems. I wonder how easy it is for a knowleable thief to steal cars like this, maybe 30 secs?

my versa definitely has a hole, on the drivers door only. I've had several copies made that work fine.

Well since I had a Versa, and I am an electronics guy, it really would not take very long to get in the car, get the wires I need, and hot wire the Versa. I AM NOT A CAR THIEF NOR DO I STEAL CARS OR CONDONE IT, but doing what I do, I do see how people steal cars, and I do things to prevent these things.

Hmm, interesting. I'll have to check it again (not my car). So, you can use the duplicates from home depot to open the car? It won't disable the electronic system and that only happens when you insert the duplicate into the ignition?

color me stupid, but I'm pretty sure you have to have physical key access to the car door. Say you're in a hurry, get out of your car and leave the headlights on. You come back a few hours later to find the battery dead and you have no way to get into the car, or open the hood to jump start? I don't think that nissan would force you to hire a lock smith to pick your lock in the event of a dad car battery.

Also, I happen to know that an un-programed key will unlock the door, but not let you start the engine on my S. I had some work done and dind't realize they'd need to reset the BCM, so I only had one set of keys along. Now the key that wasn't programed will open the door and when you use it to try and start the car it turns the engine but won't actually start. (the dealer's gonna program he other key again - next time I'm out there.)

Just went to the dealer to get an additional copy of an S key (not intelligent key but with remote). They made the key--$26 for the key, $10 to make the copy--so I paid $37 with tax. But then she said it had to be programmed and only the service department could do it. So I took it to service department and she said $100 to program. $137 for a key!!?? I decided to think about it.

I could see the price (maybe) if it was the I-key but for just the regular key? Does this agree with everyone else? Does the I-key cost the same as the regular?? How long does it take service to program--and how do the I-key and regular remote keys compare on how long it takes??

You can program the remote to work with your car by your self - the steps are in the service manual. For the key though, the dealer has do that. I can't imagine it would take more than 5 min to program the keys, they just hook up their consult-II to the car, and re-register each key.

A few weeks ago my dealer programed both keys to work in the car, replaced the recall work for the airbag, and did a diagnostic for start-up problems in an hour flat - and reports were that just doing the recall work would take an hour and a half - so that key must have been nothing at all.
