yes they are. after the spring pops the hatch what makes it move up? i doubt a the force released by the spring will pop the hatch completely open and swing it up, just so the shocks hold it up. the spring will pop the hatch release out of its locking unit, and the gas in the shocks will extend their rods out and voila the hatch raises. thats why its a little harder to put the hatch back down on new shocks cuz ur compressing the gas when u put it back down. But i agree, the spring is prolly really dirty or just old and tired. might also wanna check the cable that actually pops the spring, maybe its cut (extreme).
