... since I don't know squat about them!

1. I assume that when one uses coil-overs, the stock springs are removed completely, right? Since it would not make sense at all to have two independent springs in there!

2. Does the damping mechanism (the "shock" portion - I don't know what to call them) of a coilover die over time (with use) like normal shocks? If so, then those can be replaced separately, right? I.e., can the coil-over springs can be re-installed onto new damping components?

3. Presumably, when replacing the damping components, you would have to use the same manufacturer as the original to ensure that the coilover-shock matching would be properly maintained, right?

Thanks,

Z

tHINK OF A COIL OVER AS A SHOCK(damper) WITH A THREADED BODY, THAT THE SPRING PERCH CAN BE ADJUSTED DOWN OR UP with, thereby adjusting ride height / and or spring preload. Damn caps lock, sorry, any ways. Ohh wait, that is what a coil over is.

To awnser your questions:1. yes2. yes3. yes

Coil overs replace the springs and dampers

Yes, dampers on coil overs ware out over time just like any other damper. Some dampers(shocks) can be rebuilt, some can not. The springs are completely separate, or can be removed from the dampers any ways.Yes you don't really want to mix and match different company dampers/coil overs for a number of reasons. Most "good" coil overs can have their dampers valved to custom specifications and what ever spring rates (with in the limits of the damper) that you want or need. Most cheap coil overs can't be rebuilt, or revalved, and may not allow for deviate from what ever spring rates they offer. High end coil overs can be set up to do pretty much what ever you want. The only limiting factor is the depth of your wallet.

Hope that helps.
