Okay, well I just bought a 97 240 and my parents MADE me take it in to the local nissan dealer for state inspection just because the check engine light came on, and they helped to pay for it. Well 2 hours later i get a call from the dealer saying that "the two rear brakes are bad" even though I just popped off the wheels to see if all of the brakes were in good condition and they were fine. Also the guy said something about a "MAP BAR0 Sensor," that supposedly measures intake pressure, being bad and they need $300 to replace the thing. Of course, after they told me the liez about the brakes I went and picked up the car, but all I want to know is if these lying bastards are actually telling the truth about this mysterious part the called the MAP BAR0 sensor. Since i have naver heard of such a thing I am wondering if they are actually telling the truth about this part, if it is real I would like to know how much it costs, where it is located on the car, etc. I know this may be a dumb question, but I don't like being tricked out of large sums of money. Also on top of all the other crap they failed my car on the state inspection because "the brakes are metal on metal." Any info would be greatly appreciated...but please no flaming.

Alex

map/baro sensor is a real component. MAP(manifold absolute pressure) baro(barometric pressure). you probably have a code stored for it. it is under the hood. I think it is on the passenger side of engine compartment near the strut tower. black sensor with one vaccum line to it and one electrical connector. it may have the word "boost" stamped on it. the price on it new aint cheap. may be around 200 bucks

Do S14's really have MAP sensors? I had no idea. What does the ECU use the MAP sensor for, when it reads air flow from the MAF? Not trying to be sarcastic or anything, I've just never heard of a car having a MAP and a MAF.

it is strickly used for evap testing nothing else. it is not used as GM uses it to control fuel.

do not take it to the dealer. of course the dealer will take your money and make you pay for parts that really don't need replaced. happened to my brother and costed him $1200. the suckered him in. don't know about MAP BAR0 sensor. sorry the got you. but they do good work.

This is a diagnostic/drivability issue. I am moving it to the "online mechanic forum"

I can get you that MAP sensor or "boost" sensor. $70.54 brand new from Nissan, plus a little shipping. I'm at a dealer, parts guy of course. There is nothing that keeps me from selling parts like a high labor rate.

why do I strongly doubt that they were lying about your brakes being metal on metal.... thats a pretty big safety hazard, you need to get a second opinion by a mechanic, if he comes to the same conclusions about your brakes then it is true.

or you can check the pads yourself, take off the wheel and look at the brake pads, there needs to be more than 2mm of pad material left, you need to look at the pads on both sides of the rotor, this is important, its easy to skip over the inside pad since its hard to see due to the shield around the rotor. each pad has a metal backing, and then the pad material, dont mistake the metal plate for the actual pad. you can often tell if the brake is metal on metal or not contacting the rotor correctly by the contact surface of the rotor. properly working brakes leave a smooth mirrorlike finish on the rotor. botched up brakes often leave the surface rusty or scored/rough.

I rechecked my brake pads just to make sure they werent metal on metal and all 4 pads were over 2 mm of pad left. I ended up taking it to another shop and it passed inspection just fine.P.S. hell yea that is a nice pic
