You need to make sure the tire's overall diameters are close if not almost exact.
The reason the GSX cannot do this is because you'll have one wheel spinning at a different speed than the others. Revolutions per mile differ. You should never ever run different sized tires on the driven axle of a car or truck.
For example, many(all that I can think of) modern AWD cars specify in the owner's manual that you cannot have more than 2-4/32" tread difference between any of the tires. If you blow out a tire on a subaru AWD, you cannot replace just one tire.
If your tire OD is identical between the steelie wheel/tire and the 17" unit, run the single steelie on the front. OR, just to be on the safe side, run two steelies on the same axle. The key for a 2wd, and rwd, is to keep the same rolling circumference on either side of a given axle.
