hi i have a little diliberation.i have about $5500 saved up,and i want to get an SR.my 2 choices are 1.order the swap package from heavythrottle and do thte swap myself.which note-it would be my first engine swap but i have 2 guides and that SR swap video,so i pretty much know the outline and what steps i have to take for the swap.but since it would be my first i would take my time and take it as it comes.option #2.buy the engine/trans/ecu/wiring harness from local garage for about $2400 and have the local garage put it in at a final cost of about $3400.but if i go through the local garage.i did my research and found out that the package from my local garage ($2400) plus all the parts that heavythrottle includes has a final cost of around $5900.heavythrottles price is $4700.so any positive input would be helpful.thanx a lot

there are some serious things you can screw up if you are not mechanicly inclined... remember if you are going to drive this thing fast .. like we all do... then do you have the KNOWLEDGE and the TOOLS to do it so you can trust your car at over 100mph or how ever you are going to drive.. there is no price limit on being safe and secure

Do it yourself, I was in the same position as you and im really glad I did it myself. You save money, gain knowlege, and best of all, there are no shady people involved to F things up.

USsil80, I disagree, there is nothing to mess up that would make the car any more dangerous than any other lump of metal flying down the road at 60mph. If you have managed to mess up that much, chances are it wont even get to the end of the driveway. I did mine without any previous experience and my car (and motor) have survived 9000 hard miles on the road and on the track (and this was all built with a walmart tool kit, heh).

yeah, if you got a place to do it and the tools needed, just get some friends and beer and get to work. the car will definatly mean alot more to you than dropping it off at a shop. youll also have a good idea of how to get to stuff when it starts breaking. i say go for it!

Do eet yourself with help from someone who's done if before. I learned a helluva lot about SR's and my 240 by doing so, all of which will come in handy when I have to work on it in the future.

If you have people that can help and you have the right tools, DIY all the way.

Hey, new_to_drift. I am getting ready to drop mine in next weekend. own3d said it best you'll definitley appreciate the car after the hardwork and sweat. Even more once you drive it for the first time..shoot the first time it comes to life. I am so excited about mine. I am about to bust a n** thinking about it. Here are three people saying DIY (not DUI) that should be enough to help with your decision. That's if you got the T.P.T. (Tools,Place, and Time). Research will be you biggest tool. Just when you think you got it, ah **** you don't it. Use this

Which DVD are you talking about? Shift 180? If you are talking about the DVD with the Canadian guy who wants to build a 180sx, then I'm sorry to disappoint you but that DVD won't really help you too much with the SR swap.

This is the one and only guide I used:

http://www.nicoclub.com

Ok well that and an australian S14 silvia (200sx there)) factory service manual for the SR torque specs.

Seriously, I probably spent a total of $250 on tools and thats it. Info can be found free on the net, no need to pay for it in my opinion.

Cheap tools:

Another vote to do it yourself. Not only will you save money doing it yourself, but after installing the engine, you'll be confident in doing any repairs yourself as well. Saving even more money...

Please dont say ridiculous stuff like this

Factory service manual: booklet (availible on the web in PDF format) that contains information on how to take apart, service, and put back together everything on your car.

Torque specs: the amount of torque one would use to tighten a bolt or nut. The FSM (factory sevice manual) has the required torque specifications for every nut and bolt on the entire car.

soo true, if you dont do it yourself, then its just like buying a car and driving it around.

You wont know S&(#$*@#$ about the motor.

You cannot take Pride in your OWN workmanship.

To me, when I see people who pay to have their stuff done just cause they have the money, then I feel like laughing out loud when they try and take a pride on their car.
