Could be the timing chain guide... those go out, wouldn’t be out of the question for it to go out at 70k miles, and that would make a clacking noise. First thing I would have done before buying the motor would be a compression test. That will tell you more than trying to guess by listening.

what were you doing to that motor to only get 152k miles? I got 270k out of my KA and it was still cranking away when I took it out and put it to rest. I wasn't easy on that motor either, I was always pounding on it.

My ka-e has well over 200k and still runs strong. And it was free.

Not to be an arse, but I would never pay $300 for a sohc (prob not even a DE) unless it's been rebuilt or something.

But anyways, check the firing order, but sadly, that's probably not it. You can tell the difference between misfire and rod-knock...if it's as ^ said, a clacking, rattling noise it's prob a guide or tensioner, but if it's a deeper clunking sound that increases as you accelerate...then it's rod knock.

They can get pretty loud...my friend had a guide that was completely off and just stuck right below the valve cover...it sounded like when you shake a paint can. You should be able to put your earclose to the front / top of the motor and probably hear that that's where the noise is coming from.
