I have a '91 Q45 with 245/45 17's Dunlop SP 9000 summer tires. I had a leak in the passenger front tire, tried to drive it 1/4 of a mile with no air to a gas station. They fixed the leak, but said they that the tire was unusable. It had a pile of ground rubber on the inside of the tire. Is this tire indeed toast? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes the tire is wasted. The inner wall is probably all f*cked up from rubbing on the wheel and is completely unsafe to use.

Driving on flat tires = bad idea in the future.
