Today I had Frank Hill { Hill's Garage in Baltimore} replace my weeping turbine sensor and replace the rear main and tailshaft seals along with installing a new flexplate {my old one had a few chipped teeth and occasionally grinded when starting the engine}

Frank was positive he could remove the transmission without removing the exhaust, even though the FSM states it must be removed to drop transmission- I watched in shock as he unbolted and positioned the hydraulic transmission jack into position- and sure enough, he was right as I watched the transmission slowly descend from its home and clear the exhaust with room to spare!!! I am shocked the FSM says you must remove exhaust, as clearly you dont, and on a old Q with original exhaust, you really dont want to wrestle with those rusty old bolts and clamps if you dont have to!!!!

Frank examined driveshaft and determined it to be in good shape at 227,300 miles. All in all, another wonderful experience dealing with this shop- professional, knowledgable, personable, and fair pricing.

Removing the exhaust makes it easier to reinstall the transmission upper bolts. Really depends on how many Q you work on every week, Every tech develops his on style matched to tools he has.

I put 4 trannys in my 55 Chevy, first one took me about 3-4 hours and I had every tool box open and the last one took about 45 minutes with maybe a socket, wrench and big screwdriver.

I always enjoy stories where its easier in real life.

I saw the same thing when Da Beast had transmission work done (twice), but I chalked it up to the headers and aftermarket exhaust. Nice to know (as some of those exhaust bolts get rusty) it can be done without dropping the exhaust.

Man I miss having a Q
