Just got my RB20DET running on my S13. I bought a RB20DET motor set that didnt come with piping for my side mount intercooler. Question, can I drive the car without the intercooler? I need to drive it to get piping made.

Another thing, this may be bad, but when I started the engine I noticed that there is a small amount of oil that is coming from the lower intake piping that leads to the turbo. Is that a bad thing ?

Thanks

you can drive with the intake pipe off, but it will jsut be no boost. oil in the intake pipe maybe caused by crankcase blow by. if there's alot, your turbo might be shot.

i have the oem piping for the side-mount and an extra side-mount intercooler if you're interested.

Yes, very interested in the piping..email me at [email protected]

So a little oil is ok that eventually goes to the side-mount intercooler is ok ?

those oil will find its way back into your intake manifold, bad for preformance, as it decrease the octane of your gas. you could incorporate an oil catch can to get rid of oil blow by

significant oil blow by could lead to more serious problems in the future.

running w/o an intercooler is ok, your car will just be totally NA. remember there will be 2 points where air is entering (your intake plenum, and your turbo inlet - so make sure those are clear of sucking things in), and 1 point of exhaust which should be fine

well 2 points of exhaust going to the atmosphere if you count your charged air as exhaust

make sure you move the MAF sensor off of the turbo and put it on the intake pipe. i wouldnt reccomend revving above 2000 when driving also. .

i was also going to say to keep the revs real low.

you will be free spinning the turbo under no resistance. if you get on the gas, you can spin the turbo up to 250,000+ rpm and blow it to pieces.

Well I think the turbo is indeed blown , I started the car yesterday and let if run for under 5 minutes and I saw smoke in the area of the turbo, and there was oil coming from the lower turbo intake pipe. Darn, now to go looking for another turbo.

?? The rb30et's and rb20et's from R30 or 31's and VL Commodores have no intercooler. There was a pic of an rb30et on a few of these nissan boards a week or two ago. I don't think Nissan and Holden just put the turbo on for looks. If you ran the intake to the turbo inlet and the conpressor outlet straight over to the intake manifold, the turbo would still boost, it would just be much less powerful right??

you can run a turbo to the intake manifold without an intercooler, the bad thing would be that so much heat from the turbo will cause detonation, thats where the intercooler comes in, to cool down turbo temps goin into the intake.most ppl don't even run an intercooler until they go up of 6-8PSI.

i was under the impression that we were talking about running the motor NA, with the turbo not plumbed to the intake.
