For the most part, in OUR imported Nissans, the coolant reservoir tank is more of a bleed-off when the temps get really high inside your cooling system. Well, for this to happen, you have to have a bad fan, bad wiring for the electric fans (if applicable), bad radiator, old coolant, bad water pump, broken water pump belt, etc. As long as you do NOT have the reservoir hose BLOCKED off and the extra water/antifreeze can escape the system and bleed off, then you are fine. Now, some DOMESTIC cars are different and actually use the reservoir as the fill spot for the radiator. It is USUALLY pressurized and is required in order for the cooling system to function.
I broke the upper part of the radiator where the piece of plastic comes out from under the radiator cap and leads to the reservoir unknowingly on my 96 Maxima. I drove around on it for quite some time before I saw it. I didn't notice ANY high temps or improper cooling of any nature. However, when I did see it was broken, I plugged the hole with a screw in the radiator where the plastic piece broke off from. This in turn built up a ton of pressure in the cooling system and actually started blowing high pressure high temp water/antifreeze from where the radiator meets the top endtank where the radiator cap screws onto. I had to purchase a whole new radiator afterwards. The best I could figure is that by plugging the hole, the air and pressure inside the cooling system could not bleed off anywhere, so it found a way out by blowing the radiator.
