well it comes standard on many cars.and since all cvt's have it, i dont see how it could be bad.

its just telling the car when to "shift"

thats like saying is it ok to roll down the windows

Are you asking if it's ok to shift it into manual mode when you're cruising down the road? If that's your question, yes, it's fine. You don't know how many times I hit the shifter over to the left while I was cruising down the highway. it just goes into 5th gear is all

If you currently drive a manual shift car, do NOT expect the CVT to satisfy you.

It simulates the gears of a normal transmission, and it does it very poorly in my opinion. But where i consider it a bad thing, others may see it as good.

Basically the CVT shifts are VERY VERY smooth, it does not have much up a get-up-and-go if you are used to controlling your car via manual shift.

So if you are looking for a smooth, hassle free ride, go with the CVT.

If you are looking for a sporty feel you get from a manual, there is no substitute, you gota get the 6MT

Robs right... it wont make you think your driving a stickshift.. but it wont damage the car..

When i was driving autocross i used the tiptronic... (i dont use it at all really, i like the hassle free driving for a daily driver) It made a difference and got me better times. But its not going to make the car a MT!

I have to agree totally, you never get that "throw you back in your seat feeling" with the CVT, however, I have driven an automatic C6 which definitely throws you back in your seat, I'm sure a CVT (if it could handle that kind of power would too)...but we're talking apples and oranges there

the CVT is different than other automatic transmissions that have a 'manual' mode.

Other auto transmissions have physical gears that it uses and shifts between, and can give you control over that shifting. I believe that is what the C6 probably had. The CVT has no physical gears to move through, they are all simulated RPM ranges determined by the computer.

So in a car with a normal auto /w manual mode, you can still get that 'throw back' feeling, but with the CVT its not gona happen. You can feel 'pushed' against your seat, as the car does have some balls, but to get 'thrown' back, your gona need a turbo or a MT haha

That "throw back" feeling is usually transmission shifting, not real power (C6 may be different) THe CVT was created to purposefully get rid of that annoying jerkiy feeling that auto transmissions and manuals have when changing gears... some call it sporty, but IMO, its only sporty when there's enough power behind it... I was in a car with someone driving a corolla and they were bragging about the "power" the car had, saying stuff like " look how it just throws you back"... I laughed out loud on accident...

Anyway, I love the manual mode on my CVT when "downshifting" or simulated downshifting should I say... and occasionally I'll shift to manual and drop her to third to accelerate quickly on the highway also! just my .02 on the tiptronic

so true lol

I went from an old 4 banger mazda 626 5 speed to the 3.5 coupe, I found out the difference between that 'throwback' real quick. The 3.5 is a ball to drive as a 6MT, but then again, I am 23 and love whipping it around (within reason). I also sit in 45mins of traffic each way to/from work, so I can sympathize with anyone who gets a CVT for a convenient commute haha. I am just addicted to having complete control over my RPM level

Maybe I'm picky but I feel like the CVT in manual mode is harsher than a standard tip-tronic automatic. When I shift with it, it the tach just drops like a brick when you 'shift' where with a geared automatic it kinda falls out of gear and then slips into the next. Maybe its just that, since there is no gear there isn't any lag between. But I do agree, its no comparison to a regular automatic, and certainly not a substitute for a manual.
