Driving in manual shift mode all the time is fine, it won't harm the engine. There is a limiter when you are in manual shift mode so you can't even red line the engine. Putting your car in neutral while driving is a bad idea however - don't do it.

It's not the car being in neutral that's bad ... it's going from drive to neutral and vice versa while moving that will wear on the transmission.

Why do you put your car in neutral to go down a hill?

I believe that is a strategy hypermilers user to get better fuel efficiency.

i also wondered when driving it in manual mode should you treat it as if it were a manual car meaning ..... as you are about to shift should you let off the gas peddle then shift then gas it again or just always keep the gas peddle pressed?

You could do either or.........floor it to shift, and letting off the gas to shift. Has more of an manual feel though when you let off the gas to shift it. The triptronic has that limiter that will shift regardless.

That is my exact answer..haha..there is this long stretch of road that goes down hill and I usually switch to neutral..guess I won't be doing it anymore now I know it's bad for the transmission..

You actually get worse gas mileage from doing it too - do some research on the net from actual car websites, not websites filled with yacko's that think they know how cars work...
