I've been searching here and around for hours trying to find TRUE and ACCURATE weighings of the engines and transmissions of all the popular swaps.

I've heard the RB20 and 25 are same, then heard they're different, then heard they are 180lbs more than sr, then heard they're 40lbs more.

I want to know the difference of the rb20det and trans vs. the kade and trans, but there is no solid, trustworthy data to be found.

Any help to clear this up?

Thanks,Nick

Why???????????????????? the all work and drive well, very little differance that a normal drive can tell. RB20 is less than the RB25 do to the trans being lighter....

Heh, well I'm not a normal driver, and it is kind of important to me if it's 35lbs more like I've seen in some posts, or 180 lbs. That changes things with suspension, tire pressure, whether or not I need to do other weight reduction on the car..etc.

I think it's just good to know. ;)

Well, then you need to know that the front of the RB's sit 6" closer to the radiator than either the SR or KA, moving the CG forward about 3".

As far as the weights go, I have not seen any direct engine weight measurements. However, someone did measure weight distro's with an RB25 in their S13. Results are in the thread here:

The rb's weight is mainly located in the transmission, and it sits in a further back and more central location, and while it may be closer to the rad that doesn't mean that its more front heavy... i do believe the rb engine is not much more then the KA in weight.. it's the transmission that makes that 720 pounds the number it is...

And that is the rb25's transmission? I'm considering the rb20 at this point and hear the transmission is a bit lighter than the 25's...true?

Well my probe transmission was stock and most people couldn't get them to not break with anything over 250whp, and I ran about 350whp through it for a while and was fine.

So, I'm aiming for 350whp on this car and I figure if the engine can take that safely, as long as I don't powershift and get rough on it, then it too will be able to hold.

Any more info on weights?

THE RB20DET IS ONLY 65LBS HEAVIER THAN THE KA24E, THIS IS BOTH COMPLETE ASSEMBLIES. THE KA24E WEIGHS LIKE 4LBS MORE THAN THE SR20DET.

Ok, can always rely on PROJECTRB for some good info. So how I'd guess the KA24DE is a bit heavier than the KA24E.

I think I'm gonna go the RB20 route because of the $2000 savings over the 25, and I'm gonna make it an inspiration for those who want the RB engine but think the 20 is not worth it!

(I hope..hehe)

WE have had PRO level drivers in our car to test the handling and He felt that with the extra power and TQ it was a better package.

NOT ALWAYS, I HAVE MY MOMENTS (BUT I LEARN FROM MY STUPIDITY)...... I TRY TO GIVE THE MOST ACURATE INFO AVAILABLE TO ME, BUT TO RELY ON ME IS LUDACRIST BECAUSE I'M AM A USELESS IDIOT IN THE LONG RUN.

ANYWAY, WE ACTUALLY DID WEIGHT THE ENGINES AND THEY ARE 65LBS HEAVIER THAN MY KA24E PACKAGE.

So you're saying, in essence, the rb20 is only about 25 lbs heavier than the ka24de? That seems too good to be true!

It's hard to compare, each engine would have to have the same accessories (ps pump, a/c compressor, manifolds, etc) all bolted to it to make it a straight up comparison. I'd think the 24de isn't quite 40lbs more, but I'm not sure.

Either way, I'm getting a cf hood and moving the battery to the trunk; that should offset any extra weight. Also, I'm gonna be removing the stock auto trans, which weighs a bit more than the manual version.
