So my girlfriend of 8 months who was the first person I ever actually loved, decided that she and I needed to take a break. Not like "I love popcorn" type of love but rather a "I remember everything about you and want to make you happy all the time" type of love. So I am heart broken over all of this and I have been having a hard time getting over it. So today I just had this urge to go and drive, and drive away everything that has been bothering me.

So anyway, where I live if you go west you go further into town and if you go east you go further into the country. I basically live right on the border between the two. Like, 1 mile west takes you into heavy super traffic and 1 mile east takes you into empty untouch paved country roads.

So I jump in the 240 and turn on the engine and listen to the wonderful sound of the SR20 humm. I manuever from my neighborhood and find my way to the main road that leads to the country. Since it's a weekday nobody will be on the roads as they are all at work. I just push the car. I drive and I'm entering speeds of 90+ in a matter of seconds but it feels like I'm only doing 50-60. I just keep going and it feels so great. My music is playing and the wind is blowing through the cabin. I just think about everything and the drive is just making it all better. The twisties of the roads I visited with my former car feel different but not that much different. I still take them at high speeds. It was so wonderful. It made me feel so alive again. God, I love driving. Such great therapy for the mind. [/sappy hippy crap]

Good stuff.

Sorry about your breakup (I remember my first), but that's why we have the hobby we have.

When our cars cease to become enjoyable, then it's time to get rid of it and buy a minivan.

Yes, exactly. Driving is so good for the soul. I should probably do it at a time when I know nobody will be out though, because I was passing up 1 or 2 cars at like 100mph. Oh and another thing, stupid STUPID speed limiter! Oh my fricken lord that thing is so annoying. =(

I totally agree about driving being therapeutic, but I totally disagree with driving like a lunatic on the street. Get your adrenaline/speed fix at a track/autocross, not on the street. It doesn't matter that the road looks empty. At the track/or/autocross, You'll meet some nice people, who share your passion, other than cops and rescue workers. Heck you might even meet your next gf at a track/autocross event.Just my $.02

Last summer, i used to drive at night with the music down listening to my ghetto engine reving and the dropping as i shifted. best way to unwind after a messed up day at work. now i dont drive at night as much, usually when iim coming home from my GF's house. shes not as big a fan of driving as i am, but she likes to have some fun every now and then.

I'm a supporter of spirited driving in its purest form, on the streets. That is, when its done with responsibility; i.e. not causing other people to die and stuff.

I guess that says something because my brother died from going too fast into a corner and crashing.. I'll always know my limits.

But if someone pulls out in front of you on a blind corner or an animal runs out in front of you, you can't know that those things are going to happen when you are going really fast around those corners. Also you may know what you can handle, but you can't handle your car at those limits when something unexpected happens. I drive a little fast on occasion, but you can't tempt fate too much on the streets. Just my $.02 on this one.

These aren't streets mind you. These are 20 ft wide Country highways that are basically the sidewalks of ranches that are seperated by acres and acres of land. They are my way of dealing with things because I've been banned from writing (too emotional and scares people) and I can't take out my anger in my Tae Kwon Do classes (I'm a teacher) and I've lost the will to paint and write music. So driving is all i have left, and now that i have all this power it's just so hard not to drive fast when nobody is around.

Sorry about your break up. I know it sounds corny and cliche, but everything does work out for the best, and if it's meant to be, it will be. You shouldn't impede your creative outlets. Writing and art are incredible forms of therapy, and provide very meaninful insight into your soul.

Driving is great therapy for me. Sometimes when I have alot on my mind and I need to get away I drive for hours straight, and end up going way farther than I ever expected. One time I drove for more than five hours, without a break, north on Highway 1 and ended up in San Francisco. I've also ended up in LA a couple times. The really wierd times are when I do some exploring on roads I've never been on before, and I see signs posted, so I get out to read them, and realize I've driven onto an Air Force base with no idea how I got in without passing gates or anything. Especially when I'm near places that have signs that say "Warning, Unexploded Shells".

Hahahah! Yeah, hey where do you live? You sound like you live pretty close to me. I'm in Fresno. My writing have been banned by a lot of people (parents, school, etc.) because I wrote too good for them. Hehehe. I just lost my will to paint, it was just getting nowhere and I was wasting a lot of money. Driving is what I feel is best for me now. Man, I've driven for hours and somehow I always manage to find my way back home even if I don't pay attention to the roads. It's like my car just knows...

I live in SLO (San Luis Obispo). When people read my writing before meeting me they don't believe I did it. I speak much different than I write because when the words are in front of me I can't help but edit and organize them to sound intelligent. When I speak, I just come across as the punk kid that grew up in Pasadena. I wish I was more creative. My mind works in an analytical, logical, scientific way. It makes life pretty boring.

I cant wait until I get some money and finally (after over two years of dreaming) get my 240. That will make therapeutic driving even more effective. I'm tired of front wheel drive, and my old VW Golf GTI is getting tired.

thanks man, i'm going through the exact situation, i was going to marry this girl but i guess she has other plans. situation blows. but the 240 is bum and the wrx's brakes aren't good enough for me to take out stress on it, so i'm just moping around and going to the jazz game with my co workers(gotta love company 4th row tickets for free) this post is probably really old but yah i use my cars for therapy all the time.

whether or not something is stressing me out or not. I would find some parking garage and chill out at the top and just somehow it clears my head and can think a lot better. no distractions, no one to bother me, no cell phone, just me and my coupe and a nice night out.

Other than that, I agree that it's "good therapy." ( I guess I'll call it that for now)
