Helpful hints for those out of town. And maybe a few other residents?

HOW TO DRIVE IN JERSEY 1. You must first learn to pronounce the city name, it is Nork Rhymes with Fork, not New-ark. 2. The morning rush hour is from 5 AM to NOON. The evening rush hour is from NOON to 7 PM. Friday's rush hour starts on Thursday morning. 3. The minimum acceptable speed on the turnpike is 85 mph. On the Parkway it's 105 or 110. Anything less is considered "Sissy." (Just ask the Governor of NJ) 4. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Jersey has its own version of traffic rules. For example, cars/trucks with the loudest muffler go first at a four-way stop; the trucks with the biggest tires go second; However, in Monmouth county, SUV-driving, cell phone-talking moms ALWAYS have the right of way. 5. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out, and possibly shot. 6. Never honk at anyone. EVER! Seriously. It's another offense that can get you shot. 7. Road construction is permanent and continuous in all of Jersey. Detour barrels are moved around for your entertainment pleasure during the middle of the night to make the next day's driving a bit more exciting. 8. Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, skunks, dogs, cats, barrels, cones, celebrities, rubber-neckers, shredded tires, cell-phoners, deer and other road kill. 9. Map Quest does NOT work here -- none of the roads are where they say they are or go where they say they do and all the Turnpike EZ Pass lanes are moved each night once again to make your ride more exciting. 10. If someone actually has their Turn Signal ON, wave them to the shoulder immediately to let them know it has been "accidentally activated." 11. If you are in the left lane and only driving 70 in a 55-65mph zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be "flipped off" accordingly. if you return the flip, you'll be shot. 12. Do not try to estimate travel time -- just leave Monday afternoon for Tuesday appointments, by noon Thursday for Friday appointments, and right after church on Sunday for anything on Monday morning. SAFE DRIVING ! ! ! P.S. Most of this is more true in LA then NJ.

What a place to live in. Seems flying in and using a taxicab is a safer way to move around the city.

you forgot that when going threw an ez pass you NEVER NEVER NEVER drop below 50mph. And if it is an express ez pass dont drop below 80. If either of these rules are violated, YOU ALSO WILL BE SHOT!

What happened to you in JERSEY that made you wright this?

I just got back from NJ on Tuesday, I was in the New Brunswick area, and drove all over. But seriously this state has the most messed up roads I have ever driven on. If you do not know where you are going before you leave you might as well count on not getting there. The jug handle turns are also rediculous I hope there is a lot of research that has been done to prove that it is a more efficient and more safe way to make a left turn. I honestly never want to go back. I did see a lot of G's though, including 2-G37's and a G35 at the Crowne Plaza where I was staying all next too each other the one night.

The reason behind the jug handles is the state is so congested that making left turns backs up traffic. In Florida for example there are three left turn only lanes in some locations. Most roads in NJ are not wide enough.I agree that road signs in some places especially Southbound on the Garden State Parkway to Newark Airport are misleading. You have to go West on Rt 78 and go to the next exit to go back East on Rt 78 to get to the airport. Keep that in mind if you ever return. It is not clearly marked. One other thing about New Jersey is you cannot see Russia from here.

I have to say there are cops everywhere in jersey ready to pull you over, and I have never been able to go more than 10 over the speed limit in any lane on any highway b/c all lanes are taken up by people driving the same speed... Its bad enough I work there, I could never live there.

Out of state drivers are usually held to a stricter standard than residents.

This appears to be the case in many states as a fund raiser?

I was in a long line of vehicles driving in Virginia a few years ago & I was the one that got pulled over for speeding. When driving out of state it is never a good idea to go over 5 MPH over the limit

Out of state drivers are less of a headache for cops when it comes to paying up and avoiding a legal fight. The farther your car is registered from the county or city you received a ticket, the happeir the cop that writes you the ticket because the chance that you will challenge the ticket is greatly lessened. Cops really don't like to show up in court---it a hassle for them especially if the court date is on their off-duty day.

Yeah I've never gotten a ticket out of state (knock on wood) but I see more cops in Jersey in a day than I do in PA in a week, so you always gotta be watchin... The main reasons I couldn't live in jersey is the front license plates and housing/taxes are too expensive.
