I'm guessing you're definitely not supposed to ride in neutral and throw it back in gear with CVT transmission right?

I had to the other day because of how far the gas station was and coasting to red lights from far away seemed like the only option to making it...

How bad is doing this for your car? My house is about 3 miles uphill from getting to lights and the city streets and I would be able to coast down every day to get to where I need to go.

I wondered about that, too, and read something in the owner's manual about being able to shift to neutral if the engine dies to restart it. So I haven't felt too bad about coasting about 4 miles down one long grade every morning, and have now put a total of 122,000 miles over 3-1/2 years on two separate CVT Versa's with no ill effects.

(One note - my engine is well warmed up after about 10-12 miles of highway driving at this point. I don't know if it would make a difference doing it right out of the driveway with a cold engine and transmission, as it sounds like you're wanting to do...)

The cvt transmission is not metal on metal, there is a thin layer of oil in the middle, so its ultra low friction. Thats why you almost never have to change the fluid.
